
Hanks was reunited with Ron Howard in his next part, playing the commander and astronaut Jim Lovell in Apollo 13 (1995). The film was widely lauded by critics, as well as the performances of the entire team (which included Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris) as well as Kathleen Quinlan. The film received nine Academy Award nominations and won two. Hanks later starred as Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animated film Toy Story (1995). He made his directorial debut one year later with The Thing You Do! The story tells of the downfall and the rise of a rock band. Hanks also performs the role of a music producer. The Time magazine's Richard Schickel called it "charming" and many critics agree that Hanks' performances earned him a spot in the top romantic comedy stars of in his generation.
